108 OHL grads competing in Calder Cup Playoffs

The 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs get underway tonight and 108 OHL graduates will be competing for the American Hockey League’s prestigious championship trophy.

Included in that figure are 13 players who competed in the OHL this past season while an additional 15 graduated following the conclusion of the 2016-17 campaign.

The Tucson Roadrunners, the AHL affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes, leads the way with 13 OHL graduates on the roster while the Charlotte Checkers (Carolina Hurricanes) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins) trail close behind with 12 and 11 respectively.

AHL award winners in Most Valuable Player Phil Varone (Lehigh Valley Phantoms/Erie Otters) and Top Goaltender Garret Sparks (Toronto Marlies/Guelph Storm) helped guide their respective clubs to playoff berths while long-time AHL veteran Tom Kostopoulos (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins/London Knights) will suit up in his final Calder Cup Playoff run at the age of 39.

Each of the 16 teams competing in the AHL Playoffs feature at least two OHL grads while each of the league’s member teams feature at least one graduate on the list. The Erie Otters lead the way with 10 alumni on the road to the Calder Cup Championship while the London Knights trail with nine followed by the Guelph Storm and Oshawa Generals with eight each.
