Draft eligible OHL talent goes all-out at NHL Combine

With the 2017 NHL Draft on June 23-24 in Chicago, IL, fast approaching, top prospects from across the globe descended on Buffalo, NY, for the 2017 NHL Scouting Combine.

The event featured 104 players in total, with 22 OHL representatives on hand to put their best foot forward in one-on-one meetings with NHL clubs and the usual physical testing elements that measure a player’s athletic makeup.

The 22 OHL players participating included 16 forwards, five defencemen and one goaltender.

Standout OHL testing performances included Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds forward Morgan Frost who had top-10 finishes in six different events including a first place result in the Wingate Bike Test’s Mean Power Output. Owen Sound Attack power winger Jonah Gadjovich was also a frequent sight in top-10 listings, appearing five different times including a pair of second place finishes in the Grip Strength testing.

Other top finishers from the OHL included Mastercard Memorial Cup champion Gabriel Vilardi of the Windsor Spitfires who wound up second in the Wingate Bike testing’s Fatigue Index. Peterborough Petes centreman Zach Gallant finished tied for second in Pull-Up testing.

The top-ranked OHL skater headed into the draft, Vilardi, who came in as the third-ranked North American skater behind Brandon’s Nolan Patrick and Halifax’s Nico Hischier, revealed he had soreness in his right hip and back following last weekend’s thrilling Mastercard Memorial Cup championship victory.

Though he didn’t take part in lower-body testing, he did have a smile on his face throughout the proceedings in Buffalo.

“Won a Memorial Cup, so coming off a big high,” he told “Was great hanging out with the guys in Windsor, and then getting here, meeting these teams, it’s been fun.”

Here’s a complete look at how Vilardi and other OHL players fared in the various testing exercises:
