Matt Finn grew up in Toronto idolizing the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now he is one.
The Guelph Storm defenceman was drafted by his hometown Maple Leafs with the fifth pick of the second round of the National Hockey League entry draft Saturday at Pittsburgh’s Consol Centre.
After the disappointment of not being drafted in the first round Friday night, Finn was all smiles as the horde of Toronto media gathered around him after he was picked 35th overall.
“For me this is unbelievable,” said Finn, 18, whose favourite player growing up was former Leafs’ blueliner Bryan McCabe. “To grow up in Toronto, watching the Leafs, then to be chosen by Toronto: it’s something else. It’s awesome.”
It didn’t stop there for the Storm organization at the seven-round draft.
Fergus native Brock McGinn was picked by the Carolina Hurricanes with the 17th pick of the second round (47th overall), then Scott Kosmachuk and Tanner Richard were taken back-to-back in the third round. Kosmachuk went 70th overall to the Winnipeg Jets. Richard went next to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“It’s been awesome. Me, Scott and Brock were rookies together so we’re really good friends. To go through something like this today is really something,” Finn said.
McGinn was the big surprise. Rated 49th amongst North American skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau, he was rated behind Richard and Kosmachuk. A wrist injury that kept him out of the lineup for weeks last season didn’t help.
