The sun is setting earlier, the nights are a little cooler and Guelph Storm coaches George Burnett, Jake Grimes, and Luca Caputi are in the office all this week getting acquainted and planning the upcoming season for the local hockey side.
Training camp will begin during the last week of August and head coach Burnett said the team has invited a large number of players and he is expecting some wide-open competition for several spots on the roster.
“Our numbers are quite high with 47 kids coming to camp and that is higher than I’d like to see (normally),” said Burnett. “We’ll split them into two teams and on day one we’ll practice, then on the second and third days we’ll scrimmage in the morning and the evenings.”
One of the real benefits of camp is exposing the new recruits to veteran players like Givani Smith and Isaac Ratcliffe.
“Giving our youngest kids a chance to play and compete against a number of our veteran players will be helpful for their development,” said Burnett, in his first year as head coach and general manager.
“Whether you’re the first pick like Tag Bertuzzi or a later pick, it will be the first opportunity to wear Storm gear and to be in the room together and in the gym together seeing how big and strong and committed some of the established veterans are.”
