From the Stands: Quite a season for Guelph Storm’s Ryan Merkley

By Paul Osborne, Guelph Mercury

Guelph Storm rookie defenceman Ryan Merkley had one of the greatest rookie seasons in franchise history in 2016-2017 and is one of the glowing hopes for the team’s future.  To put his season into perspective, see the rookie seasons of the top four all-time Storm point leaders:

Age        GP         G          A          Pts          PIM         +/-

Kevin Dallman            17            68            8            30            38            52            15

Kevin Mitchell            17            65            10          46            56            73            n/a

Matt Finn                    16            60            3            18            21            23            0

Drew Doughty            16            65            5            28            33            40           -11

Ryan Merkley             16            62            12          43             55           48           -41

Yes, Merkley’s plus/minus is ugly but the other four played on much better teams with Dallman playing in 11 playoff games in his rookie season, Mitchell 12, Doughty 14, and Finn five.  He didn’t quite overtake Mitchell for the most points by a rookie defenceman, but keep in mind he was a year younger and played three fewer games.
