The Guelph Storm announced today that defenceman Ryan Merkley is the Player of the Week for the week ending December 11, 2016, earning the honours for the second time this season.

The rookie defender had a stellar week starting with a two-goal performance against the Sarnia Sting on Wednesday, December 7, for the rookies first multi-goal game of his young OHL career. The Toronto native then picked up an assist in Friday night’s loss to Owen Sound. Yet it was his performance on Sunday that was truly special, he first scored a highlight reel goal to bring on the teddy bears, he then picked up the primary assist on the go-ahead goal early in the third and would seal the game in overtime, to cap a two-goal, three-point game.

The Mississauga native now has a three-game point streak, where he has four goals and two assists for six points. In total, the five-foot-11, 164-pound defenceman has six goals and 15 assists for 21 points, which ranks him third in OHL rookie scoring and tied for 11th in OHL defenceman scoring.

Next, the Storm end the first half of the season with a couple of divisional matchups, heading to London to face the Knights Friday night, and then return home on Saturday afternoon to take on the Kitchener Rangers for the Adopt-A-Family Christmas Fundraiser in support of Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington.
