Merkley named Player of the Week

The Guelph Storm announced today that defenceman Ryan Merkley is the Player of the Week for the week ending March 19, 2017, earning the honours for the third time this season.

The first-year defenceman capped a stellar rookie campaign with a seven-point (2G, 5A) week, registering a point in all four games last week. The Mississauga, Ontario native opened the week with the game-tying goal and assisting on the go-ahead goal in Tuesday nights OT loss to the Kitchener Rangers.

He then followed that up with back-to-back two-assist nights on Friday and Saturday, before closing the season with a power play goal against Highway Six rivals, the Owen Sound Attack.

Merkley finishes his rookie campaign eighth in OHL defenceman scoring and first in OHL rookie scoring. The five-foot-11, 164-pound defenceman also led the Storm in scoring with 12 goals and 43 assists for 55 points in 62 games played, becoming the first Storm rookie in franchise history to do so.
