Rookie’s first goal a winner

By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury – Daniel Poliziani finally got rid of the goose egg Friday night.

The rookie Guelph Storm defenceman’s first Ontario Hockey League goal turned out to be the game winner in a 6-2 victory over the Owen Sound Attack at the Sleeman Centre.

After going 44 games without a goal, Poliziani could breath a big sigh of relief.

“I can’t explain how good it feels,” said the 18-year-old rookie who was a 15th and final round pick by the Storm in the 2009 entry draft.

Adding to the pressure was that he was the last Storm regular without a goal this season.

“I’ve thought about it the whole year, being the last one to get their first goal. It was definitely on my mind,” he said. “The guys didn’t tease me much. If anything I made fun of myself more. But I’m definitely happy to have it out of the way.”

The game winner came at 3:33 of the second period and put Guelph up 3-1 at the time.
