Storm blanked by Spitfires

On the hunt for the first win of the 2017-18 campaign, the Guelph Storm were blanked by the defending Memorial Cup Champions, the Windsor Spitfires, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Despite outshooting the Spitfires 30-28 on the game, the Storm couldn’t get anything past Michael DiPietro, who was perfect for Windsor’s third straight win of the season.

Anthony Popovich was in the blue paint for the second straight game, making 24 saves in the loss.

The game’s first goal came with less than four minutes remaining in the first, as Windsor’s Aaron Luchuk sent a wrap around pass through the slot, finding Mathew MacDougall who went top shelf for the eventual game winner.

Moving into the middle frame, Ryan Merkley was penalized for roughing, and Windsor used the power play opportunity to build on the lead, this time with Luchuk the recipient of a D-to-D pass from Austin McEneny. Off the feed, Luchuk took a step in to get a shot through traffic and past a screened Popovich at the 13:29 point of the period.

The Spitfires added two more goals in the final 20 minutes, with the first coming 42 seconds into the third as Luke Kutkevicius outskated Mark Shoemaker to push through to the net for a shot off.

Igor Larionov completed the 4-0 score just over four minutes later with a shot from the point.

The Storm return home on Friday, September 29 to host the Oshawa Generals for a 7:30pm puck drop. Tickets can be purchased online here, by calling (519) 837-9690, or in person at the Guelph Storm Box Office.
