On labour day Monday the Storm welcomed the Mississauga Steelheads to town for the first home preseason game of the 2017-18 season. Looking to start off strong in front of the home crowd, Anthony Popovich would get the call in net with the Steelheads countering with Emmanual Vella.
The first period got off to a quick start as the Storm found themselves in penalty trouble just minutes into the period. It didn’t take long for the Steelheads to capitalize as Shaw Boomhower would score a powerplay marker just 3:40 into the period. As the first continued both clubs had good scoring chances, but it was the Storm that would capitalize and even the game at the midway point with Garret McFadden firing a shot top shelf to even the game at one. Through twenty minutes of play the score was 1-1 with the Storm leading in shots 10-8.
Heading into the second period, Boomhower scored his second of the game giving the Steelheads a 2-1 lead, but it was the Storm that would come out of the second on top. Isaac Ratcliffe (pictured) scored to tie it up and Givani Smith would pop a late one home to put the Storm up 3-2.
In the third the Steelheads would register the only goal, forcing the game into a shootout scoring with just 3.6 seconds left with the man advantage.
Alexey Toropchenko was the lone scorer and the shootout hero netting the winner for the Storm.
Shots at the end of the game were 41-31 in favour of the Storm.
Up next, the Storm will continue their pre season schedule on September 14th as they host the Hamilton Bulldogs at the Sleeman Centre for a 7:00pm start. They close out the exhibition season on Saturday, September 16th at 7:00pm when the Peterborough Petes visit the eye of the Storm.
