Storm fall just short in 2-1 loss to Attack

Following a big 5-3 win over the Flint Firebirds at home on Friday night – a win that featured Isaac Ratcliffe netting a hat trick – the Guelph Storm paid a visit to the Owen Sound Attack on Saturday for a contest full of great goaltending, and minimum offence.

In a tight 2-1 game, the Storm came up just short as rookie netminder Nico Daws put together a remarkable performance between the pipes with 45 saves for second star honours.

For the Attack, goaltender Olivier Lafreniere also had a strong outing as the game’s first star, turning aside 24 of 25 attempts, including a massive glove save on the Storm’s Cam Hillis in the latter half of the final period to keep the Attack up by one.

After a scoreless first that featured several big saves from Daws to keep two zeroes on the board, the game was decided offensively in the second period. Opening the scoring was Hillis, getting the puck through with a quick shot to the net to capitalize on the man-advantage.

1:09 later, however, the Attack came right back as Alan Lyszczarczyk fed Cade Robinson with a pass from behind the net to slip the puck right past Daws to make it a 1-1 contest nearing the halfway point of the middle frame.

With under two minutes remaining in the second, the Attack took advantage of a four-on-three power play in what would be the eventual game winner as Ethan Szypula potted his seventh of the season on a one-timer from the top of the face-off dot.

In the third, the Storm pushed to tie up the game, including a rocket from Hillis in the latter half of the period, but were unable to convert.

The Storm look to rebound quickly on Sunday afternoon when they visit the London Knights for a 2:00pm puck drop.
