Michigan split for Storm

By Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury – It can be a short trip from the press box to the penthouse, just ask Patrick Watling.

The rookie Guelph Storm forward, a healthy scratch Saturday night in Plymouth, was named the first star Sunday as the Storm salvaged two points from the weekend with a 5-1 win over the Saginaw Spirit.

Watling had a goal and an assist, as did fellow fourth-liner Spencer Turcotte, as the dog-tired Storm got some much-needed quality icetime from the third and fourth lines.

“They took me out of the lineup for good reasons,” Watling said. “It got me to look at my game more, realizing I have to get pucks down deep in the other team’s zone.”

Watling had been guilty of some mid-ice turnovers in Friday’s loss to Owen Sound.
