Pedan nets OT winner

Andrey Pedan capped off an exciting third period comeback with the overtime winner to electrify a standing room only crowd of 4,504 on Friday night.

Jason Dickinson opened the scoring for the home side with his first of two on the night only 74 seconds into the first period.  Matt Finn and Zack Mitchell picked up assists on Dickinson’s first of the season.  The Spirit replied with a pair of goals before the first intermission to grab a 2-1 lead after 20.

Garret Ross netted the only goal of the second period to double the lead to 3-1 and set the table for a dramatic third period comeback.  After failing to convert during 1:37 of five-on-three action to open the frame, Guelph finally solved Jake Paterson at the 10:37 mark.  Once again it was Dickinson as he deflected another point shot by Finn for his second of the night and season.  With the crowd abuzz, Justin Auger evened the score at three just over four minutes later.  Some terrific attack zone pressure by the trio of Auger, Robby Fabbri and Brock McGinn led to a shot that Paterson kicked out to the big Storm winger who stretched out to send the equalizer in the back of the Spirit cage.  In the final minute of regulation, Guelph continued to press and while they couldn’t manage the go ahead marker, they did draw a cross checking penalty on Terry Trafford that proved to be a turning point.

Saginaw opened the extra time a man down and it didn’t take long for the Storm to capitalize.  Tanner Richard spotted Pedan backdoor and the Storm blueliner roofed the game winner for a 4-3 final.

The Storm will enjoy a day of rest before hosting the defending OHL Champions, the London Knights on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
