Retooled Spirit bury Storm

A weekend away from the Sleeman Centre didn’t start well for the Storm as they watched a 3-2 first period lead turn into an 8-3 loss versus the surging Saginaw Spirit.

Justin Auger continued his strong play of late adding two more goals in a losing effort.  Since notching his first career OHL goal on December 31st, the Waterloo native has four tallies in his past three games.

Despite being outshot 14-6 in the opening twenty, the visiting Storm owned a 3-2 lead.  Joining Auger on the scoresheet was Zack Mitchell with his team leading nineteenth of the year.  The Spirit continued to press in the second adding twenty more shots compared to just six by Guelph.  Unlike the first, Saginaw capitalized on the sustained pressure and counted three to take a 5-3 advantage into the third period.

A pair of Josh Shalla goals followed by a late marker by Nick Moutrey made it an 8-3 final.

The Storm will have a long drive north to Sault Ste. Marie to lick their wounds before they try to regroup on Saturday night against the Greyhounds.  The next home action for Guelph is Friday, January 13th when the Windsor Spitfires visit the Sleeman Centre for a 7:30 start.
