The Guelph Storm continued their winning ways against the Barrie Colts tonight, with a 3-1 pre-season victory at the Barrie Molson Centre. They continued to build on a strong offensive attack, outshooting their opponent for the third straight game.
The Storm and Colts played a closely contested first period. Barrie scored a late period goal on a shot from the point by Josh Carrick that beat Matthew Mancina through traffic. Guelph carried the play, outshooting the Colts 15-8. Colts goalie MacKenzie Blackwood stood tall, making a number of key stops as Guelph applied the pressure offensively to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The second period went scoreless as the Colts outshot Guelph 7-6. Both teams were unable to sustain offensive pressure. Both goalies made key stops to keep their teams in the game. Storm goalie Matthew Mancina made a nice glove stop to deny a goal on a Colt power play. Meanwhile, Colts goalie Blackwood preserved the 1-0 on a glove save against Zac Leslie, on a nice drop pass in the slot by Tyler Bertuzzi. Storm rookie and Barrie native Bradley Van Schubert took over for Mancina half way through the period.
The intensity picked up in a chippy third period, leading to penalty trouble for both teams. Tyler Bertuzzi and Rocky Kaura ended up dropping the mitts in the tail end of a little scrum after the whistle. After killing off a 4-on-3 power play for the Colts, the Storm capitalized on their own 5-on-3 minutes later. Pius Suter finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play started by Garrett McFadden to Robby Fabbri, who threw the puck cross crease to Suter.
McFadden would have another beautiful assist sliding the puck under the defenders stick on a 2-on-1 break to Auger who potted the goal over the glove of Colts goalie Blackwood.
Robby Fabbri sealed the deal by scoring an empty net goal as the Storm outshot the Colts 16-8 in the third period and 39-23 for the game.
