Storm rolls over Spirt

Sunday afternoon, the Storm put some distance between themselves and the ninth place Saginaw Spirit with a 5-1 road win.

A one goal Guelph lead with seven minutes remaining in the third made for some nervous moments for the visitors until Cody McNaughton and Hunter Garlent scored just seven seconds apart for some breathing room.  Spencer Turcotte rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the season and his second point of the game.

The Spirit opened the scoring at the 3:47 mark of the first when John McFarland scored shorthanded.  McFarland’s 17th of the year turned out to be all the offence that Saginaw would muster.  Guelph evened the game at one less than six minutes later with Tanner Richard tallying from Andrey Pedan and McNaughton.

In the second, the visitors outchanced their hosts early with Jake Patterson making several stops.  With 5:31 to play, Patrick Watling beat Patterson for the eventual game winner from Turcotte with Mac Nichol picking up the second assist – his first career point.

Collecting assists in the final twenty on the Storm’s three-goal outburst were Matt Finn, Pedan, Jason Dickinson, Tyler Bertuzzi and Watling.

Garret Sparks picked up the win in goal with 26 saves.

Friday night, the Storm will go for their second straight win when they host the Barrie Colts for Teddy Bear Toss Night.
