Storm suffers rare home-ice loss

By Tony Saxon, Guelph Merury – The die had been cast long before the Guelph Storm and Saginaw Spirit hit the ice at the Sleeman Centre Sunday afternoon.

The Storm’s seven-game winning streak came to an abrupt stop as the Spirit easily handled the Storm 6-3 before 4,792. It was just Guelph’s fourth loss on home ice all year.

Storm veteran Ryan Horvat said the team was not mentally prepared for Sunday’s game.

“I think were a little too loose in the room before the game after coming off a pretty big win on Friday,” Horvat said. “We’ve got to make sure we’re doing the right things away from the rink. We’ve got to be mentally more prepared.

“We kind of put ourselves ahead of them. We didn’t focus and they took it to us.”

The first-place Storm was undeniably outplayed by the sixth-place Spirit, but with a busy stretch that sees Guelph play five times over the next eight days, starting Monday night in Owen Sound, nobody was going to press the panic button.
