From the Stands: Guelph Storm’s import picks

It is always a bit of a gamble when you draft players in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft but it looks like Guelph Storm GM Mike Kelly has picked up two good ones in defenceman Dmitri Samorukov and forward Albert Michnac.

Samorukov was a late arrival to camp with visa issues but since appearing he has started to show why the Storm selected him second overall.

“We knew when we drafted Samorukov he loves the big hit and that he likes to play physical,” said coach Jarrod Skalde after his defenceman laid out four Mississauga Steelhead players in two games over the weekend.

It is a skill that seems to have faded from the game but Samorukov resurrected names like Scott Stevens, and for the real old time hockey fans, Brian Glennie, as fans looked for comparisons.
