From the Stands: Kelly key for Guelph Storm assistant GM

By Paul Osborne, Guelph Mercury

The Guelph Storm announced recently that Phil Golding is the team’s new assistant general manager working under coach and GM George Burnett.  Golding has been with the team for 10 years, starting out as manager of the club’s retail store, Spyke’s Sports.  Last year he was elevated to the position of assistant to the GM as Mike Kelly saw his potential on the hockey side of the operations.

“Having Mike as a mentor was amazing,” said Golding.  “A few years ago he pulled me aside and said, “Phil I know you’ve been involved on the business side for years but keep on your toes when it comes to the hockey side.”  He felt I had an eye for talent and should keep developing that.  That opened a scouting role and then the administrative role last season.”
