Storm acquire Liam Hawel from Greyhounds

GUELPH, ON – Storm General Manager Mike Kelly has announced the acquisition of Liam Hawel from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in exchange for defenceman Noah Carroll and picks in upcoming OHL Priority Selections.
The Storm will also receive Sault Ste. Marie’s 3rd round pick in 2021.
“As difficult as it is to lose Noah Carroll, this is a very good ‘hockey trade’ for both organizations,” said Kelly. “The Greyhounds needed a veteran, left shot defenseman; and we need a right hand shot centre.”
Hawel, a six-foot-five, 179-pound centre from Arnprior, was the Greyhounds’ first pick (22nd overall) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. He posted four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 65 games during his rookie season with the Greyhounds and has 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 38 games played this season. The sophomore centre is eligible for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
“We are extremely excited to add Liam to our talented group of young forwards,” continued Kelly. “He is a player we coveted in his draft year. His hockey sense, skill and puck moving ability will enhance our offensive game and compliment some of our skilled wingers. We want to welcome Liam and his family to the Storm organization.”
Carroll, who was selected by the Storm in the fourth round, 77th overall in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, has played 169 games in a Storm uniform, registering seven goals and 36 assists for 43 points in 161 regular season games. The six-foot-one, 183-pound defence from Strathroy was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
“The Storm would like to thank Noah and his family for their commitment to the Storm organization, and to bettering the Guelph community with his involvement in volunteer initiatives,” commented Kelly. “Noah is an outstanding talent and person and we wish him every success in the Sault and in his future career with the Carolina Hurricanes.”
Sault Ste. Marie also acquires three picks from the Storm for upcoming Priority Selections, including the following: Saginaw’s 3rd (2017), Conditional Guelph 3rd (2018), and Guelph’s 2nd (2020).
