General Manager and Head Coach George Burnett announced Saturday that Owen Bennett has committed to an Ontario Hockey League Standard Player Agreement with the Storm.

Bennett, a 6’2”, 190 lb goaltender from Georgetown, was the Storm’s fourth round selection (67th overall) in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

“Owen is amongst the top goaltenders in his age group and we are very pleased that he and his family have committed to joining the Storm organization,” said Burnett.  “We understand that he had many options to further his development in hockey and at school, and we are thrilled that he has chosen Guelph to pursue both.”

“After a strong year of development in Carleton Place, we feel that Owen is ready to play in the Ontario Hockey League, and will be a major contributor to our club’s long-term success.”

Bennett enjoyed a standout season with the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians in the CCHL2, posting a 17-10 record along with a .909 save percentage and 2.48 goals against average.   During the final month of the regular season, Bennett found his groove, carrying at 5-1 record with a .954 save percentage and 1.31 goals against average.

In the CCHL2 playoffs, Bennett continued his strong play as the Canadians advanced to the league’s semi-final.   Bennett’s playoff run featured an incredible 66-save performance on March 8 in a double-overtime loss to the Westport Rideaus.

“I am extremely excited to have officially committed to the Guelph Storm,” said Bennett.  “It’s a great organization with great support from the community.  I look forward to getting started with the team immediately as I continue my preparation for training camp.”

The 2002-born Bennett is a product of the Halton Hurricanes minor hockey league program, which also produced former Storm forward Jason Dickinson, now of the Dallas Stars.  During his minor midget AAA season in 2017-18, Bennett posted a goals against average of 2.61 for the Hurricanes.

Earlier this spring, Bennett attended the Storm’s Prospect Orientation Camp, and is scheduled to attend 2019 Training Camp, which will kick off in late August in advance of the 2019-20 OHL season.
