Nichols named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week

The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Justin Nichols of the Guelph Storm is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the playoff week ending April 5 after posting a 3-0 record with a goals-against-average of 1.29 and a save percentage of .965.

Nichols made 110 saves last week backstopping the defending OHL champions to a berth in the Western Conference Semi-Finals with a five-game series win over the Owen Sound Attack.  With the series tied 1-1 and the Storm playing on the road, Nichols made 34 saves and earned third star honours in a 2-1 victory in Game 3 last Tuesday night.  On Wednesday night he put together a first star performance with a playoff career-high 48 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory in Game 4, then wrapped up the series with 28 saves on Saturday as second star of a 2-1 Game 5 victory over the Attack.

Nichols, a 19-year-old from St. Catharines, ON, is playing in his third OHL season and second with the Storm.  After capturing a Robertson Cup with the team last season, Nichols posted a 34-20-2-1 record with two shutouts this season along with a 3.26 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage.

Also considered for the award this week was rookie Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips who went 2-0-1-0 in three games against the Spokane Chiefs posting a goals-against-average of 1.65 and save percentage of .952, while fellow rookie Daryl MacCallum of the Charlottetown Islanders went 2-1-0-0 with a shutout victory against the Sherbrooke Phoenix posting a goals-against-average of 1.38 and save percentage of .962.
