Rieder leads Rangers into second round

By Josh Brown, The Record

Tobias Rieder didn’t wait long to impress his new club.

The Kitchener Rangers centre had his best playoff game this year mere hours after learning that his NHL rights had been traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Phoenix Coyotes.

Rieder potted his first goal of the post-season and added three assists to lead the Rangers to a 4-2 victory against the Guelph Storm Friday night at the Aud. With the win, Kitchener ousted the Storm from the playoffs by taking the OHL western conference quarter-final best-of-seven series in five games.

“It was a huge night for Tobi,” said Rangers’ associate coach and assistant general manager Paul Fixter. “He’s a leader on this team and he showed it. He rose maybe to show Phoenix that they’re deserving of getting him.”

The German import was warming up for Game 5 when he was informed that the Oilers had sent him south to the Coyotes for forward Kale Kessy, who plays for the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers.

Rieder was selected by the Oilers in the fourth round of the 2011 draft but never came to terms with the club. If he doesn’t ink a deal with the Desert Dogs, he’ll go back into this year’s NHL draft.

The 20-year-old joined a conference call with the Coyotes after the game and was not available for comment.
