By Kyle Austin, The Saginaw News – What does Josh Shalla (pictured), the new Saginaw Spirit single-season goals leader, remember about playing in the most exciting Spirit playoff game ever at The Dow Event Center?
“A good four or five periods, I just sat right in the middle of the bench,” Shalla said.
Shalla was a member of the Guelph Storm in the 2009 playoffs, the last time the Spirit and Storm faced off in a first-round series. Game two at The Dow went to two overtimes before the Spirit finally pulled out the home win, 7-6.
Two years later, the series is the same — Saginaw vs. Guelph and the first round starts Friday night at The Dow — but everything is different for Shalla and two of his teammates.
Shalla is one of three Spirit players who have played for the Storm, along with forward Mathew Sisca and defensemen Ben Chiarot. More Spirit players used to play for Guelph than any other Western Conference team.
