Storm blanked by Subban and the Bulls

The Belleville Bulls rode the 34 save shutout of Malcolm Subban to a 6-0 victory over the Guelph Storm on Friday night.

Brendan Gaunce scored two goals for Belleville (15-9-0-0) while Luke Judson and Garrett Hooey each added a goal and an assist.

Brandon Foote and Garret Sparks faced a combined 34 shots for the Storm (10-9-1-3) who started the game sloppily and were never able to recover.

Belleville scored the opening goal of the game on a bad bounce in front of the Guelph net. After Foote tried to shovel the puck behind the goal, it jumped over his stick and ended up in the slot where it was quickly pushed home by Judson.

After a fast-paced first period which saw few stoppages, the Storm found themselves unable to find that back of the net and would trail 1-0.

The Bulls extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second. After getting beaten between his skate and the post, Foote let in another through the five-hole. The third goal would send the Whitby, Ontario native to the showers early.

Foote’s replacement, Sparks, was tested early having to make several difficult saves for the home team keeping them in the game.

Hooey would add to the Belleville lead beating Sparks over the glove with a hard wrist shot seconds after the Storm had killed a delay of game penalty. During the man advantage for the Bulls however, Tanner Richard made a solid shot block with his left skate and was visibly hurt. He managed to kill the rest of the penalty but struggled to get back to the bench after.

Early in the third period the Storm found themselves on a lengthy 5-on-3 power play. Despite having a handful of good chances, they were still unable to solve Malcolm Subban. That would be the story of the night. The Storm fired 34 shots on net and weren’t able to put any of them over the goal line.

Belleville would add two more goals to bring the final score to 6-0.

Guelph will look to right the ship tomorrow when they host the Plymouth Whalers.

Puck drop is at 7:30.
