Tony Saxon, Guelph Mercury – Bring on the Knights.
The Guelph Storm will face the London Knights in the opening round of the OHL playoffs, with the best-of-seven series kicking off Friday in London. Game 2 goes Sunday in Guelph.
The Saginaw Spirit beat the Plymouth Whalers 4-1 Sunday afternoon to finish one point ahead of the Storm in the final standings. Guelph had beaten the Owen Sound Attack 3-0 to wrap up its regular season Saturday and was one point ahead of Saginaw going into Sunday’s action.
The other first-round matchups in the West pits the Windsor Spitfires (1) against the Erie Otters (8), Kitchener Rangers (3) versus Saginaw (6) and Plymouth (4) up against Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (5).
“This will be a war, and in the end that’s what you hope it will be,” Storm coach Jason Brooks said Sunday afternoon of the impending series with London.
“If both teams play the way they are capable of playing, this will be a heck of a series. Can we beat them? Yes. Are they a great team? Yes. Anything is possible.”
The two teams met six times during the regular season, with London winning five of the games and outscoring the Storm by a combined 29-14. Guelph’s only victory was a shootout win last November.
