Storm 0 at Spirit 1… 1st period action

In Saginaw on Sunday afternoon, the Storm were looking to extend their three-game win streak and pull just two points back of the Saginaw Spirit for seventh, but came up short in a 4-3 loss.  Special teams were the difference in this one with the Spirit powerplay converting on three of four attempts, while Guelph was unable to cash in on any of their three powerplays.

A night earlier, the Storm were badly outshot and still took out the fourth place Plymouth Whalers in a one goal decision.  Sunday’s game was much different, with the tired Storm owning a 38-27 edge in shots on goal, but coming out on the losing end.

Saginaw built 2-0 and 4-1 leads and despite a brave comeback effort couldn’t manage the equalizer.  In the first period, Jordan Skellett and Ryan O’Connor scored with the man advantage to give the hosts a 2-0 lead after 20.

The scored would remain 2-0 for most of the second frame until Michael Latta finally found the back of the Spirit net for his 31st of the campaign.  Jordan Szwarz replied with two goals inside the first six minutes of the third to give Saginaw a comfortable 4-1 lead with just 14:09 to play.  Playing their third game in less than 48 hours, Guelph refused to surrender scoring twice in the last 10 minutes to make it a 4-3 final.  Taylor Beck cut the lead to two with his team leading 33rd of the season at 10:18, before Matt Sisca became the third Storm player to hit the 30 goal mark with only five seconds remaining.

On Wednesday, the Storm will play their third straight game south of the border when they travel to Erie for a 7 pm start against the Otters.  On Friday night, the Sarnia Sting will visit the Sleeman Centre for a 7:30 puck drop.  For tickets call or visit the Guelph Storm box office or buy online at GuelphStorm.com.
