Training Camp underway in Storm City

2014 Training Camp Roster.pdf

After a magical 2013-14 season in which the Storm captured their third OHL Championship, training camp offers a chance to officially turn the page to begin a new chapter and a new season in Storm City.

For many of the returning players, it’s been quite a busy summer.  OHL Playoff MVP Robby Fabbri was selected in the 1st round of the NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues and will be looking to build on the electric 45-goal, 87-point regular season he posted in 2013-14.

Fabbri, along with Jason Dickinson, Tyler Bertuzzi and Ben Harpur, attended Hockey Canada’s U20 Summer Development Camp in advance of this winter’s 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.  The Storm led all CHL clubs in representation at the camp, which was held earlier this month near Montreal.

Sophomore defenseman Garrett McFadden attended Hockey Canada’s Under-18 camp in Calgary and will be counted on to play an increased role in his second season in Guelph.

Also among those returning to camp from the 2014 championship team are goaltender Justin Nichols, star defenseman Zac Leslie, and both of the team’s import players; Swiss tandem Phil Baltisberger and Pius Suter.

With so many graduating players on last season’s veteran-laden team, the door is open at training camp for several younger players to establish themselves on the 2014-15 team.

Tyler Boston and James McEwan both got a taste of OHL action last season and will be players to watch as camp gets underway.  Elsewhere up front, the 2014 OHL Priority Selection yielded first-rounder Matthew Hotchkiss and third-rounder Evan Brown, both of whom recently signed with the Storm and will be looking to impress at camp.

On defense, a trio of 1997-born prospects look to vie for a position on a blueline that will potentially boast five returnees.  All three of Noah Carroll, Austin Hall and Kyle Rhodes signed with the Storm last spring, so keep an eye on them as training camp progresses.  Carroll is the brother of former Storm forward Tyler Carroll, who played four seasons with the Storm from 2007-2011.

Players will report to camp during the afternoon of Thursday, August 28th and will attend photo sessions, team meetings and fitness testing before gathering for a team dinner.

On-ice sessions begin Friday, August 29th and continue through Sunday, August 31st prior to the first exhibition game on September 1st vs. the Mississauga Steelheads at the Sleeman Centre.

Fans are welcome to attend the on-ice sessions, with rosters available at the Storm box office near Sleeman Centre Gate 6.
